An excellent, classic Tarpon fly, with a black and red color combo that looks great in the water and offers good contrast. When tarpon are in the mood, this fly gets very positive eats.

Designed initially for those on the east coast of Florida, this surface popping shrimp was a custom fly that turned into a much sought production pattern. It has been a key pattern for those on Biscayne Bay, the Keys and Everglades for snook and bonefish, as well as those targeting saltwater salmon in Puget Sound and Alaska.

For every few fish that want a baitfish, there's always one that wants a surface bug. The RIO's Gurgler Alarm is the ideal "do everything" pattern for that fish. Tied on a heavy saltwater hook and with a weed guard, this fly will work for everything from bass to tarpon.

Big fish like little fish, and soon after the original Kinky Muddler started making the rounds and netting some monsters, those same big fish told us they needed a trimmer, smaller version as well. This pattern is a stealthy, neutrally buoyant baitfish imitation that mimics the profile of small and midsized baits. It sports a water-pushing head that makes its tail wiggle just like a real baitfish, and it calls tarpon, snook, and reds out from the mangroves. Largemouth bass love to ambush it as it hovers near lily pads, and it’s also a killer baitfish imitation in clear water flats and bays, when you need something subtle that can be inched and scooted along in shallow water for stripers and blues. And yet, despite its backcountry pedigree, raging albies and small tuna in the rips also love to hammer it, because it swims so naturally.

RIO's Smelling Salt was designed with the laid up tarpon in mind, with a soft landing presentation, foul preventing mono loop under the tail, and neutral buoyancy for a perfect fishing fly. On recent research trips it was noted that this fly also had a very interesting side effect, in addition to tarpon, snook couldn't keep their mouths away from it. This pattern is ideal for the Florida fisherman that doesn't necessarily want to purchase "tarpon specific" patterns, and would rather buy patterns that will work for many species.
